AUTO EROTICA DANCES INTO CANNES SHORT FILM COMPETITION USING
GENARTS SAPPHIRE PLUG-INS
Auto Erotica unites man and machine in a flirtatious rendezvous that plays on the human love affair with automobiles. The short modern dance film puts a spin on the sleek look of auto advertising by combining it with a sensual performance from dancer Farley Johansson. Produced and directed by Kenneth Sherman of Karma 2000, a production company in Vancouver, Auto Erotica uses GenArts Sapphire Plug-ins to achieve fluidity throughout the film. A subtle Glow effect is used on all white background sequences, contributing to the graceful tone of the film. Sapphire's WipeClouds effect is used extensively to create dream-like transitions with abstract moving texture and the Zap effect is utilized to generate lightning bolts in one of the scenes.
"Sapphire Plug-ins really made this piece come together," says Sherman. "We were using a brand new workflow at the time, shooting HDV, off-lining in HDV, then on-lining by doubling the resolution through a Miranda box and re-rendering the Sapphire Plug-ins in true HD. The clean subtle textures these tools brought to the look of the piece and its transitions enabled us to achieve a great look with a low budget."
Auto Erotica has been recognized as one of ten films selected as a finalist for the short film competition at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. The online competition will be available from May 8 to May 22, in English at www.nfb.ca/cannes and in French at www.silenceoncourt.tv.
